I agree wholeheartily with Raina Kelley in her article ‘Why We Must Teach Boys’ it is imperative that preventing abuse comes starts with teaching. All children need tools to grab onto to help them navigate, be kind, make good choices. We live in an era where there are a myriad of messages being sent to young people and as parents, teachers, coaches, aunts, uncles, friends to our youth we need to start sending clearer messages.
Raina writes “Surely, there must be a way to educate boys about violence outside of just repeating the mantra “Never, ever, hit a woman.” I don’t think that’s working”, no it isn’t. she continues to underscore the value of teaching respect. We teach by modeling, treating first our own children with respect and second by holding them accountable when they don’t act in kind. Kudos to Raina Kelley for speaking out on this subject!
